Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is celebrated on Sunday, February 2
This feast commemorates the first time Jesus was brought to the temple in Jerusalem, as described in the Gospel of Luke. It also celebrates the purification of Mary, which was required by the Mosaic Law 40 days after the birth of a child. The feast is also known as Candlemas because of the tradition of blessing and carrying lighted candles in procession. The candles symbolize Jesus as the Light of the World. The feast also marks the meeting of the Old and New Testaments, as Jesus, the new temple of God, enters the ancient temple. It also points toward the passion and Easter.
